Marian wasn't formally trained in plant ID. But, by application, she picked it up as she gained experience in countryside management; Like most Rangers when we start off a little additional folklorey bluster at times saved a blush or two! But over time her knowledge deepened and broadened. We spent many happy hours scrambling around crags, ghylls and ravines looking for, and recording plants for the Botanical Society of Great Britain and Ireland (BSBI) county records and 2020 atlas project, alas she won't see the results of that. Ferns and Sedges became of particular interest (we participated in James Merryweather's course at Blencathra, a lovely 50th birthday present from Jackie), and looking closely became important to Marian, both in the field and in life, she took nothing as read, but took such joy in the gifts of the natural world. Great and small.
