When I first met you

Dear Marian,

I remember the first time I met you was when you came with Karl, to our house at Eaton Constantine.  You and Karl had very recently got together and it showed. You we both brimming with joy and glowing with happiness.

It was a beautiful,  bright cold autumn day and we went for a walk up Little Hill: enjoying the glorious colours, eating blackberries, playing hide and seek with Megan and her friends... having fun.

Later back at home,  I made a meal. You refused food saying you weren't hungry and  I was very surprised, because everyone else was ravenous.

When we were chatting,  I realised you were a vegan and saying you weren't hungry was a polite way of refusing what you thought was none vegan food.  I was astonished by this,  Andy and I were vegans too and thirty years ago vegans were few and far between.  It had been a fantastic day and meeting another vegan was the "icing on the cake" for us.

Back then veganism wasn't well understood and we vegans were regarded as rare and strange creatures.  It was great to find a friend who also understood the issues and cared about them in the same way as we did. It was also great to find a friend who was good fun.

I will always remember you Marian.

Much Love,  Hazel xxxx
